Selby Community Pond

The water sits calm most days, reflecting whatever sky Yorkshire decides to throw at it. Selby Community Pond is exactly what it sounds like - a proper local spot rather than a tourist trap, which means you'll find dog walkers and anglers here more often than coachloads of visitors.

It's a decent place to stretch your legs if you're staying at York South Ltd or Cawood Park nearby. The walk around takes maybe twenty minutes at a leisurely pace, though there's no formal circuit - you just potter along the edges and take in the water. Birdwatchers do quite well here, especially if you arrive early when the place is quiet. Ducks, geese, the usual suspects. In spring it's prettier than you'd expect.

Families with young children will manage an hour if the weather's decent, but don't expect playground facilities or cafés. This is a peaceful kind of place, the sort where you can actually hear yourself think. No admission charge, no opening hours to worry about - you just turn up. The nearest town is Goole, which doesn't exactly scream attractions, but that's partly why the pond works. It's genuinely undeveloped.
