Selby Wildlife Pond

The pond itself isn't huge - more of a proper working wetland than a scenic showpiece - but that's exactly what makes it interesting. You're looking at a genuinely local spot where the community has done proper conservation work, creating habitat for amphibians, dragonflies, and water birds. It's the sort of place where you might actually see something rather than just walk round ticking boxes.

Kids can do the pond-dipping thing if the mood takes them, though don't expect a visitor centre with gift shop. The real value is as a break from driving between the bigger parks. Cawood Park and York South Ltd are both within striking distance, and if you're based at either for a few days, an hour here costs nothing and breaks up the holiday routine. Spring and early summer are best - that's when you'll see damselflies and newts. Winter can be bleak, and frankly a bit muddy.

Goole's your nearest town if you need supplies, though it's not exactly a destination in itself. The pond works best as part of a broader North Yorkshire exploration rather than a standalone trip. Perfectly fine to slot in, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your week.
