Selby Canal

The Selby Canal stretches quietly through North Yorkshire, a waterway that feels frozen in time. Built in the 1770s to connect Selby to the River Ouse, it's a proper slice of industrial heritage - the sort of place where you can actually picture the barges that once hauled coal and goods along this route.

Walking the towpath is the main draw. It's flat, easy going, and the sort of stroll that doesn't demand much but rewards you with wide views across farmland and proper countryside silence. The canal itself is still working - you'll see narrowboats moving through, which adds a pleasant bit of life to the scene. In spring and summer, the banks come alive with dragonflies and nesting birds. Birdwatchers will find it decent; water lovers will find it calming.

There's no visitor centre or café to speak of, so come prepared. The nearest town of Goole is a few miles away and frankly unremarkable, but if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Apple Blossom or Cawood Park are both solid options - the canal becomes your backyard attraction. A couple of hours of walking, or a leisurely afternoon with a bike, fits the bill nicely.

Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before boredom sets in, but if you've got keen walkers or anyone who enjoys quiet water and wildlife, it's well worth an afternoon. Free to access, no faffing about with opening hours. Just turn up and walk.
