Seapark Holywood

The Lagan estuary opens up into something rather special just outside Belfast - Seapark is a proper working nature reserve where the river meets the lough, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a rushed visit.

You're looking at reed beds, wet grassland, and tidal mudflats that attract wading birds by the dozen. Lapwings, redshanks, curlews - they're here depending on the season, and the light across the water in early morning is genuinely worth setting an alarm for. There's a hide or two that let you watch without spooking everything, which matters when you've got kids in tow.

Walkers will get a solid hour or two from the paths without feeling like they've trudged miles. It's not dramatic landscape stuff - no hills to speak of - but it's quietly good, the kind of place that feels removed from the city even though Belfast's not far off. Birdwatchers will be in their element. Families after a gentle stroll between caravan park visits will find it decent enough, though toddlers might lose interest if the birds aren't cooperating.

Seapark works brilliantly alongside a stay at either Dundonald Touring or The Pods at Streamvale - both are minutes away. Hit the reserve early when it's calm, then do your beach or mountain thing later. Spring and autumn are best for migrating birds, but honestly any time the weather's decent beats sitting inside.
