Scolton Park (Doxbin)

The reservoir at Scolton is what draws you in first - a proper expanse of water that catches the light and makes you forget you're only a few miles from Haverfordwest. Walk the perimeter and you'll find yourself among woodland that's genuinely quiet, the kind of place where you notice birdsong rather than cars.

It's a nature reserve done without fuss. No visitor centre, no café, no marketing bluster. You get woodland paths, water views, and the occasional flash of movement that might be a heron or might just be your imagination. The whole circuit takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, less if you're brisk about it.

Bird watchers will find something to interest them year-round. Families with young kids might get restless after an hour unless they're the type to poke about in undergrowth looking for insects. Serious walkers will appreciate it as a decent leg-stretch between longer Pembrokeshire rambles.

Both Three Fields Campsite and Quarry Park Camping are within striking distance, so you could easily make this part of a broader holiday exploring the coast and countryside around here. It works best in spring and autumn when the light's golden and the paths aren't waterlogged. Summer gets busy with school holidays, winter can be muddy and grey.

Free to access, as far as I can tell. Just turn up with decent boots and a bit of patience.
