Scaleber Wood

Walk into Scaleber Wood and you've got a proper forest experience without needing to drive three hours north. It's a working woodland just outside Carnforth with the kind of dark, dense canopy that actually makes you feel like you've left Lancashire behind. The paths wind through mixed broadleaf - lots of oak and beech - and in spring the floor floods with bluebells. It's genuinely worth an afternoon, though don't expect manicured trails or signage at every turn.

This is the sort of place where you'll see walkers with proper boots and dogs, not families looking for a gift shop. The woodland is managed for timber, so you'll notice felled logs and clearing work in patches. Some people find that ruins the romance. I think it adds to the realness of it. The air smells right - that earthy, damp wood smell that tells you you're somewhere ancient.

Allow two to three hours if you're a relaxed walker. Bring proper footwear because the undergrowth is wet most of the year. No facilities that I could find, so pack a flask. It's free to walk through, which is increasingly rare. The nearest civilisation is Carnforth, about five minutes' drive, so you can grab a pint after if the mood takes you. If you're staying at Hidden Hills just up the road, this is an easy morning walk that feels proper rural without being isolating. Walkers will get far more from it than kids under twelve, to be honest.
