Scald Hill

The walk up Scald Hill rewards you with views across the Cheviot range that make the climb entirely worthwhile. It's not a particularly difficult ascent from Wooler, but it's steep enough to get your heart going, and the path can be boggy in places after rain.

From the top you're looking out across the Northumberland borderlands - proper expansive stuff. On a clear day you can see for miles, which makes it a favourite with walkers who know the area well. It's not the tallest peak around, but it punches above its weight for views.

The walk suits anyone with reasonable fitness and legs that aren't afraid of inclines. Families might find it a bit much if the kids are very small, but confident young walkers will manage it fine. History enthusiasts won't find much up there beyond the views themselves - this is about the landscape rather than any heritage story.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from Wooler, depending on your pace and how long you want to linger at the top. Best to go early if the weather's settled, as it can cloud over quickly in the afternoon. Winter walking is possible but muddy sections become treacherous.

If you're staying at Highburn House Caravan Park or Riverside Wooler, Scald Hill makes an excellent half-day outing that fits nicely between breakfast and an evening meal. It's close enough to base yourself in the Wooler area and explore both the peak and the broader Cheviot walking routes.
