Sallows

You'll find Sallows tucked between Windermere and Ambleside - it's not a household name, but it's a proper little fell that rewards the short walk up from the main road. The views back across Windermere itself are genuinely excellent, and on a clear day you can pick out the length of the lake stretching south. It's the kind of place locals know and visitors often miss because they're chasing the bigger fells.

The climb itself is straightforward, nothing like the slog of Helvellyn or Catbells. You're looking at maybe an hour of steady walking from the road, which makes it ideal if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Limefitt is virtually on your doorstep - and don't fancy a full day fell walk. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without drama. The fell is open access, so there's no gate fees or timing restrictions to worry about.

What keeps it interesting is the variety of the view. You get Windermere spread out below, the wooded slopes around you, and on the far side you can see right into the central fells. It's that sweet spot between effort and reward that makes for a proper afternoon out. Go when the weather's decent - clouds here mean you're just walking through mist, which rather defeats the point. Combine it with a lakeside walk at Windermere itself or a wander around Ambleside, and you've got a solid day's activity without overcommitting.
