Salisbury Hill Woodland

The woodland path up Salisbury Hill near Market Drayton climbs steadily through mixed trees and bracken before opening out to views across the Shropshire borders. It's not a dramatic summit - the hill sits at a modest height - but the walk itself is what counts. Allow a good hour for the round trip if you're not rushing, though fit walkers will crack it in 45 minutes either way.

The trees are thick enough that even on busy weekends the place feels quiet. In autumn the floor is carpeted with leaf litter that muffles footsteps; spring brings bluebells in patches. The gradient is steady rather than punishing, making it manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the 1.5-mile slog a bit much without bribery.

This works well as a morning outing if you're based at Westcott Woods Glamping or Hawk Lake Caravan Park - both within easy reach. You could easily combine it with a pub lunch back in Market Drayton town centre. The woodland isn't spectacularly wild or particularly historic, but it's proper local walking territory: the kind of spot Shropshire locals use for their Sunday leg-stretch rather than somewhere you'd plan a day trip around.

Free to access, naturally. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged if possible - recent rain makes the path boggy in sections. Worth the drive if you're already in the area; don't make a special journey for it.
