Chetwynd Deer Park

The deer roam freely here, and that's rather the point. Chetwynd Deer Park sits just outside Market Drayton in Staffordshire, a proper working estate where you can actually see fallow and muntjac deer going about their day instead of bolting at the first sign of humans. It's not a theme park or a drive-through safari - it's more intimate than that, which makes it rather special.

You walk the grounds on foot, and the deer genuinely don't mind you being there. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting them, though honestly you'll catch plenty without. The park has woodland paths and open areas, so there's real walking to do - not just a quick loop. It takes a good couple of hours to do it properly, longer if you dawdle and watch the animals. Families with children aged five and up tend to enjoy it most; younger ones sometimes find it a bit too slow-paced, but keen young naturalists will be glued to the viewpoint.

If you're camping nearby - and there are some cracking spots within five miles, including Westcott Woods Glamping just down the road - it makes a solid half-day activity. Pair it with a walk round Market Drayton itself, which has a decent high street and proper pubs.
