Saint Marys

The church sits on a rise above Clitheroe, and it's the sort of place that makes you understand why people built here centuries ago. Saint Mary's has been watching over Lancashire since medieval times, and stepping inside feels genuinely timeless. The stone walls are thick, the light comes through stained glass in that particular way that only old churches manage, and there's proper quiet - the kind you don't get anywhere else.

It's worth a visit if you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just fancy a moment of calm during a caravan holiday. The churchyard is pleasant for a wander too, with views back towards the town and the surrounding countryside. You won't need more than thirty minutes unless you're genuinely interested in the medieval stonework and monuments, in which case allow an hour.

The real appeal here is combining it with other things nearby. You're only a couple of miles from Clitheroe itself, which has proper shops and a castle worth seeing. If you're staying at Pendle View Holiday Park or Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley - both excellent if you've got kids or just want a relaxed base - this makes a natural morning outing before heading elsewhere. The Ribble Valley's got plenty of walking routes, and this church sits nicely within that landscape rather than feeling like a tourist tick-box.

Check opening times locally when you arrive - small churches can be variable about access - but it's free to go in and absolutely worth the short drive from wherever you're camping.
