Saint Mary's Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Woodbridge, all flint and stone in that particular Suffolk way. Saint Mary's is one of those places you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - the kind of medieval building that makes you realise how much history got compressed into a relatively small space.

Inside, there's decent medieval work if you know what to look for: roof timbers, some decent stained glass, the sort of architectural detail that keeps serious church-spotters occupied for a good hour. For families with young kids, honestly, twenty minutes tops unless they're proper history bores. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, though it's not somewhere you'd plan your entire day around.

It's free to visit - these parish churches almost always are - and there's no formal opening hours nonsense. Just turn up during daylight and have a look. Very much on the quiet side, which is rather the point.

The real value here is bundling it with the nearby glamping at Dawn Chorus Holidays or Savage Glamping, both within a few miles. Pop into the church on your way into or out of Woodbridge, stretch your legs in the churchyard, then head back to your safari tent or shepherd hut. It works as a gentle cultural moment rather than a destination in itself. Woodbridge itself is worth exploring too - proper market town with good pubs and reasonable shops. If you're after actual wow-factor churches, you're better off heading slightly further afield, but as part of a weekend potter around rural Suffolk, Saint Mary's does the job.
