Rye Golf Club

Eighteen holes of proper golf with views across the Romney Marsh - that's what Rye Golf Club offers, and it's been doing it since 1894. The course sits just outside the medieval town of Rye itself, so you're never far from a pint and some fish and chips after your round.

If you play to a reasonable standard, this is genuinely worth a day out. The fairways roll through classic English countryside, and the wind across the marsh keeps you honest - it's not a stroll. Beginners might find it a bit unforgiving, but that's rather the point of a proper links-style course. You'll need a handicap certificate to play here, so it's not a casual walk-in situation. Book well ahead, especially in summer.

Golfers staying at Rye Harbour Holiday Park (just half a mile away) have struck gold location-wise. You could play eighteen holes in the morning, be back at your caravan for lunch, then head into Rye town centre for the afternoon - it's genuinely one of England's best-preserved medieval towns. Parkdean Resorts Camber Sands is a shade further but still very much in range if you fancy combining a few days of golf with seaside downtime.

Allow a full day if you're making the trip - four hours on the course, plus travel. Go midweek if you can; weekends book solid. Not one for non-golfers, but if you're a member or serious about your handicap, it's the sort of place that gets under your skin.
