Rye Castle Museum - Ypres Tower

The tower dominates Rye's skyline like a full stop at the end of a medieval sentence. This is Ypres Tower, a 1365 fortress that's now the castle museum, and it's the sort of place that rewards actually climbing the stairs. From the top you can see right across the Romney Marsh and down to Winchelsea - proper views for a modest effort.

Inside it's four floors of local history done without much fuss. You'll find medieval pottery, information about the Cinque Ports, weapons, period rooms. It's solid stuff but not flashy. History enthusiasts will spend a good hour here; families with young kids might manage 45 minutes before the novelty of spiral staircases wears thin. The real draw is the vantage point and the sense of standing where defenders actually stood centuries ago.

It's free to enter, which is generous. Allow an hour if you're thorough, half that if you're just ticking it off. Go on a clear day - there's no point climbing for views through drizzle.

If you're based at Rye Harbour Holiday Park just down the road, this is a natural morning activity before heading to the beach. Winchelsea Sands and Parkdean Resorts Camber Sands are both within striking distance too. Rye itself is walkable, charming without being saccharine, and the tower slots neatly into a coastal long weekend rather than consuming a whole day.
