Rye Castle Museum

The tower itself is what stops you in your tracks - a squat, sandstone drum of a thing that's been keeping watch over Rye since 1249. Inside, the museum tells the story of how this medieval town became one of England's most important ports, then slowly lost everything to the sea. It's a modest setup, honestly. Two or three rooms packed with local artefacts, documents, and enough information about smugglers and coastal erosion to make you understand why Rye sits perched on its hill like a nervous sentinel.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already wandering Rye's cobbled streets. The view from the top of the tower - if you can manage the spiral stairs - shows you exactly what the medieval merchants saw: the marshlands that once connected to the sea, now reclaimed fields stretching toward Winchelsea. Kids might lose interest after 20 minutes unless they're the type to get genuinely excited about medieval life and tide tables.

It's free, which means no excuses not to pop in. Open weekends April through October, 10:30 to 16:00. Allow an hour maximum, including the climb.
