Old Winchelsea

The ruins sprawl across a windswept hilltop just outside Rye, and you'll know you've found Old Winchelsea when the medieval street plan suddenly appears beneath your feet - literally. What remains are fragmentary stone foundations, the odd wall section, and that peculiar sense of walking through a ghost town that never quite died. This was once a thriving port, before the sea got bored and left it high and dry. The town moved downhill to New Winchelsea in the 14th century, leaving the old settlement to crumble.

Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will find this genuinely absorbing - the layout tells the story of medieval town planning better than many intact examples. Families with restless kids, though, will struggle. There's little signage, no interactive bits, and after twenty minutes of squinting at rubble, most under-tens will be asking when they can have an ice cream.

It's free to wander about, accessible year-round. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, half that if you're just passing. The real magic happens when you piece together what was here - the church, the market cross, the burgage plots - but it demands imagination.

Stay at Rye Harbour Holiday Park or Winchelsea Sands if you want to base yourself nearby. Both are within walking distance, making this a decent half-day addition to a wider Rye exploration. The town itself - all cobbles and listed buildings - is worth far more of your time. Come here for the history angle, not the views.
