William Wordsworth lived here for 37 years, and walking through Rydal Mount feels like stepping into the life of one of England's greatest poets. The house sits on a gentle hillside above the village of Rydal, with windows framing views across the Lakeland fells - the same vistas that inspired some of his most celebrated work.

You get to see the rooms where he actually worked and lived: his study with original furniture, letters scattered about, the kind of intimate details that make history feel real rather than museum-like. The gardens are what really justify the visit though. Wordsworth designed them himself, and they're arranged across different levels with woodland paths, rockeries, and open glades. It's properly peaceful, and you can understand why he'd wander out here when wrestling with ideas.

History buffs and poetry enthusiasts will get the most from this. Families with older kids might enjoy it, but younger ones could find the house tour slow. Allow a good two hours if you want to do both house and gardens properly - rush it and you'll miss the point.

Check opening hours before you visit as they're seasonal. It's a paid attraction but reasonable value.
