Nab Scar Plantation

Walk up through Nab Scar Plantation and you'll quickly understand why locals keep this place to themselves. It's a proper forest walk just outside Ambleside - dense conifers, decent pathways, and views that open up as you climb higher. The plantation itself is fairly commercial in feel, all neat rows of trees, but that's almost beside the point. The real draw is the walk itself and what you see once you're up there.

The ascent isn't brutal but it's steady. Most people take 45 minutes to an hour to reach the top section where the views genuinely earn your effort. Clear days give you Lake Windermere spreading out below - if you time it right, Ambleside looks properly small from up here. The woodland is mixed enough that it doesn't feel like you're trudging through a timber farm the whole way.

Walkers will get the most out of this one. Kids can manage it if they're comfortable on a gradient, though there's not much to hold their attention once the novelty of climbing wears off. Bring proper boots - it can be muddy even when the rest of Lakeland looks dry.

It's free to access, which helps. You can combine it easily with a stay at Limefitt Holiday Park or Sykeside, both within easy striking distance of Ambleside town. Worth an afternoon if you're in the area and want something less crowded than the honeypot trails. Not life-changing, but solid fell walking without the faffing about finding car parks.
