Rundelstone Tor

Rundelstone Tor looms out of the moorland above Tavistock like something from a western film - all granite backbone and raw edges. It's not one of Dartmoor's headline peaks, which works entirely in its favour. You get proper views across the moor without battling crowds, and the walk up from the car park is straightforward enough that families won't spend the afternoon complaining.

The tor itself is basically a pile of weathered granite blocks, the kind you can scramble over if you're feeling energetic or just admire from the path if you're not. On a clear day you're looking at moorland rolling away in every direction - browns, golds, and that particular kind of windswept emptiness that makes Devon's high ground so compelling. The summit takes maybe half an hour to reach from below, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photographs.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider Dartmoor day out. Tavistock itself is worth a proper wander - proper little market town with decent pubs - and if you're staying at Langstone Manor just down the road, you've got the flexibility to tackle this on a quieter morning before the main attractions get heaving. Walkers will get the most from it, and anyone after a quick moorland hit without the effort of tackling something like High Willhays. Allow a couple of hours, bring proper footwear because it gets boggy, and go when the weather's clear - you've come for the views, after all.
