RSPB Gwenffrwd-Dinas

The Gwenffrwd-Dinas reserve sits just outside Llandovery in the heart of Powys, and it's one of those places that rewards you for making the effort to find it. This is proper upland habitat - steep wooded valleys where red kites circle overhead and the river cuts through ancient oak woodland. You're looking at a mix of grassland and forest, the kind of landscape that feels genuinely wild rather than manicured.

It's a walkers' reserve first and foremost. The terrain is challenging in places, so don't come expecting a gentle meander. Bird watchers will have a field day, especially in spring and summer when the valley echoes with everything from buzzards to lesser spotted woodpeckers. The red kites alone make it worth the visit - you'll likely spot several if you're patient.

Historically this area matters too. The old lead and copper mines scattered across the hillsides tell you this has been worked land for centuries, though nature's long since reclaimed it.

Allow three hours minimum if you want to explore properly, longer if you're serious about birdwatching. Bring proper boots - wet ground is near constant. The nearest town, Llandovery, is about ten minutes' drive away, which makes this easy to combine with other Powys attractions. If you're staying at Welsh Glamping just down the road, you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the rest of the day free.
