RSPB Blacktoft Sands

The River Humber stretches wide and grey at Blacktoft Sands, and if you've come for birds, you're in the right place. This RSPB reserve near Brough is a serious birdwatching spot - the kind where you'll see proper twitchers with their telescopes and field guides, but equally where casual visitors can actually have a decent time without knowing a godwit from a gannet.

The reserve sprawls across reedbed and mudflat habitat, which means winter and spring migrations are when things get genuinely exciting. You might spot avocets, marsh harriers, or if you're lucky, some of the rarer passage migrants that drop in on their way elsewhere. Summer's quieter, and honestly, the midge situation can get a bit much if the wind drops.

There are proper paths with hides - you're not scrambling through mud in your Sunday shoes. Allow two to three hours if you want to do it properly. Bring binoculars and patience. Kids who are into nature will get something out of it; those after quick thrills will be restless within half an hour.

It's free to access, which is one less thing to worry about. Based near Brough, it works well alongside a caravan holiday at Willow Pond or Little Wold Away Glamping - both within easy driving distance. Neither requires hours of your time, so you can fit it into a morning before heading somewhere else. Go early for the best light and most active birds.
