Roundway Hill Covert

You'll find yourself in proper woodland here - mixed deciduous forest with a real sense of being away from it all, despite being only a few miles from Calne. Roundway Hill Covert is the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare enough these days. The paths wind through beech and oak, and depending on the season you'll get decent bluebells or a carpet of leaves underfoot.

It's ideal for a solid walk rather than a quick stroll - give yourself a couple of hours if you want to properly explore. The terrain's gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it tedious without much in the way of features or play structures. History types will appreciate that you're walking through proper ancient woodland, the sort that's been here for centuries. Solo walkers and runners come here regularly, and it's quiet enough that you won't feel crowded even on weekends.

The main draw is simply the peace of it. No admission fees, no faffing about with car parks - just park up and head in. Spring and autumn are cracking times, when the light filters through properly. Summer can feel a bit dense and dark under the canopy.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Devizes Camping Club is closest at 3.6 miles - this works well as a morning or late-afternoon walk to break up your holiday. It won't be a highlight on its own, but combined with exploring Calne's market square and the Bowood estate nearby, it rounds out a decent day in the area.
