Rottenstone

The forest floor at Rottenstone is soft underfoot, dark with decades of leaf matter and that particular smell of damp earth you only get deep in the woods. It's a proper working forest in the Staffordshire moorlands, not one of those manicured tourist draws - which means it's all the better for a genuine walk without crowds.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you want to disappear into trees for an hour or two without much fuss, this delivers. The woodland paths are well-established and manageable for most fitness levels, though muddy patches are inevitable depending on weather. Families with young children can make a decent go of it, though older kids might find the walk a bit repetitive after a while. Serious walkers and those who just want to breathe forest air will get proper value.

What you're doing is walking. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, no gift shop nonsense. Just you and the trees. Allow two to three hours to do a decent loop without feeling rushed.

For campers based at Peak Glamping Hideaway or Buxton Caravan Club just a few miles away, Rottenstone makes a solid morning or afternoon escape. It's close enough to reach easily but far enough into the landscape to feel like a proper break from the campsite routine. The moorland setting around here rewards exploration, so treating it as part of a wider walking strategy rather than a stand-alone destination makes sense.
