Rostrevor Forest

The forest rises straight from Carlingford Lough like something out of a Victorian painting, all steep woodland and rocky outcrops. Rostrevor Forest is proper territory for walkers - there's no gentle amble here. The trails climb through mixed woodland where you'll spot oak, beech and ash, with the water constantly visible through the trees and the Mourne Mountains looming across the lough. You can do anything from a 20-minute ramble to a proper half-day hike depending on fitness and how stubborn you're feeling about those ascents. The viewpoint at the top rewards the effort - on a clear day you're looking straight across to County Louth. History buffs will appreciate the Bronze Age cairns dotted through the forest, though they're not signposted with fanfare. Free to enter, naturally, and no time limits, so you set the pace. Families with young legs will manage the lower trails fine, but anything attempting the ridge routes needs decent boot grip and some endurance. Spring and autumn are best - summer gets rammed with school holidays and midges can be fierce. It sits nicely within reach of Newry itself, and if you're based at Kilbroney Caravan Park just down the road, you've got a proper outdoor hub. The glamping spots at Greenview or Oakwood work equally well as bases. Honestly, it's one of those places where the effort matches the reward - you don't come here expecting manicured gardens, you come because the woodland itself is the attraction.
