Rosthwaite Stepping Stones

The River Derwent near Rosthwaite isn't particularly dramatic - it's shallow, meandering, the sort of beck you'd cross without thinking twice on an ordinary walk. But these stepping stones are proper charming. You get a line of flat rocks set into the riverbed, worn smooth by decades of fell walkers crossing from one bank to the other, and there's something satisfying about hopping from stone to stone rather than taking the bridge upstream. Kids love it, especially if the water's low enough that getting wet becomes optional rather than inevitable. Allow ten minutes maximum to cross and photograph - it's not a destination in itself, more a moment on a longer route through the valley. The stones are free and always accessible, though winter rain makes them slippery as eels. Go in dry weather if balance isn't your strong suit. Keswick sits five miles north, making this an easy stop on a day's walking from any of the nearby parks. Castlerigg Hall and Great Langdale Campsite are both close enough for a morning or afternoon excursion into Borrowdale. The stepping stones work best as part of a circuit - continue upstream toward Seathwaite or drop down to explore the valley floor rather than treating it as a standalone visit. If you're based at one of these parks and want a gentle riverside walk with a bit of photogenic interest, this delivers. It's no Catbells vista, but that's rather the point.
