You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Rose's Wood near Maidstone - the kind of place that feels a world away from the main road, even though it's barely a few miles from town. It's a straightforward forest walk through mixed deciduous trees, nothing flashy, just good honest greenery underfoot and space to breathe.

The woodland is ideal for families wanting a gentle ramble without committing to a full day hike. Most people will get a solid hour or two out of it, depending on how much you fancy wandering off the main paths. Walkers with dogs will appreciate the freedom here, and it's the sort of spot where kids can actually run about without you having a heart attack about them disappearing. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though it's not manicured or particularly dramatic.

If you're based at either Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Chegworth Mill Glamping - both within striking distance - this makes an excellent morning sortie before heading back for lunch. It's the kind of place that rounds out a park holiday nicely rather than being a headline attraction. No fees that I can find, and you can turn up whenever suits you.

Come when the leaves are turning or after rain when the woodland smells properly alive. Summer can feel a bit stuffy under the canopy, if I'm honest.
