Rosehill Pool

The water at Rosehill Pool sits dark and still, surrounded by mature woodland that makes you forget Market Drayton is only a few miles south. It's a proper working landscape - you'll see anglers along the banks most days, and the place has that lived-in feel rather than manicured park vibe.

What you're looking at is a former mill pond that's been quietly getting on with things for centuries. The walk around the perimeter takes about twenty minutes if you're not stopping, longer if you're the type who likes to sit and watch the water. The trees press in close on the western side, which is lovely on a hot day. Birdwatchers rate it, particularly in winter when the water attracts diving ducks and the occasional grebe.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're staying nearby - Shropshire Glamping is just down the road and makes a natural morning walk from the site. Families with young kids will find it manageable though there's not much to actually do once you've done the lap, so don't expect hours of entertainment. Walkers and photographers get more from it. The fishing community takes it seriously, so respect their space during peak seasons.

Bring wellies if you've had rain - the paths can get boggy on the north side. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure, so no cafe or loos, but that's part of the appeal for some. Free to visit, obviously.
