Rose Garden

Right on Brighton's doorstep lies this proper old-school rose garden that's been quietly doing its thing while everyone else rushes off to the pier. The formal beds are laid out in classic Victorian style, with hundreds of varieties blooming from late May through September. Peak season is absolutely spectacular - the scent alone will stop you in your tracks.

Families with toddlers will love the wide paths and benches dotted about, though teenagers might find it all a bit sedate unless they're into photography. Garden enthusiasts will have a field day identifying different varieties, from heritage climbers to modern hybrid teas. The labelling is decent enough, though some of the older signs could do with a refresh.

Timing matters here. Visit on a drizzly Tuesday morning and you'll practically have the place to yourself. Weekend afternoons in June can get busy with wedding photographers and dog walkers from the surrounding areas. Allow an hour for a proper wander, though rose fanatics could easily spend twice that.

Location-wise, it's brilliant for breaking up a South Coast camping trip. Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is your closest bet for pitching up, with several other parks like Chalky Downs within easy driving distance. Makes for a lovely morning stop before hitting Brighton's attractions or after a walk on the Downs.
