Goldstone

Standing stones don't come much more modest than this Bronze Age monument on the outskirts of Brighton. Goldstone consists of just two weathered sarsen stones, the remnants of what was once a larger burial chamber dating back some 4,000 years. The larger stone stands about six feet tall, its companion considerably smaller and leaning at a jaunty angle that suggests the millennia haven't been entirely kind.

History buffs will appreciate this slice of ancient Sussex, though don't expect Stonehenge-level drama. It's a quick stop rather than a destination - you can see everything in about ten minutes. The stones sit in a small grassy area beside a residential road, making them easily accessible but hardly atmospheric.

Families staying at nearby Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite might find it a pleasant diversion on the way into town, especially if you've got children studying prehistory. The site works well as part of a broader exploration of the South Downs, perhaps combined with a walk from one of the camping spots like Chalky Downs Campsite.

While you're here, Brighton's main attractions are just a short drive away, making this more of a 'while we're in the area' stop than a must-see monument. Free to visit, always open, and parking nearby - though that's about as exciting as it gets for poor old Goldstone.
