Roman Fort - Alabum

The ruins of Alabum sit on a low ridge just outside Llandovery, barely visible unless you know where to look. This Roman fort dates back to around 140 AD and once controlled a crucial junction in the military network that stretched across Wales. What remains today is mostly earthwork - a series of grassed-over ramparts and ditches that outline where the fort's defences once stood. You won't find dramatic stone structures or reconstructed walls here. Instead, you get to read the landscape itself.

It's the kind of place that rewards a proper walk rather than a quick car park dash. The site sits within agricultural land, and the approach involves crossing fields and following indistinct paths - which means it feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from town. History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting, particularly if you've got any background in Roman Britain. Families with younger children might find it a bit abstract; the lack of visible remains means you need imagination to see what was here. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're taking time to absorb it.

Llandovery itself is a pleasant small town with proper character - worth a wander before or after. Go when the fields are accessible and the light's good; murky weather makes the whole thing feel quite bleak.
