Rockbourne Roman Villa

You're standing in what was once someone's rather impressive country home - or at least, what's left of it. Rockbourne Roman Villa sits just outside Fordingbridge and gives you a proper sense of what life looked like for the wealthy in Roman Britain, roughly 1,500 years ago. The remains include mosaics, hypocaust heating systems (ancient underfloor heating, basically), and enough pottery shards to keep archaeologists talking for decades.

Walking around the site itself is straightforward. The villa's layout becomes clear once you understand what you're looking at - the bath house over there, the residential quarters here, storage rooms beyond. It's the kind of place where history suddenly clicks into place rather than feeling like abstract stuff from a textbook.

This isn't a massive attraction where you'll spend half a day. Most people allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're genuinely interested in Roman domestic life. It works particularly well if you're already in the New Forest area or staying at Hill Cottage Farm or Summerlands nearby - both solid caravan parks within easy reach. Families with older kids who've done some Roman Britain at school tend to get more out of it than younger ones.

The site has a small museum with finds from the excavations, which fills in gaps the ruins themselves can't explain. If you're combining it with Fordingbridge's other attractions and the broader forest walks in the region, it's well worth the detour. Standalone, it's a pleasant hour rather than unmissable.
