Robinsons Wood

The woodland around Robinsons Wood, just outside Clitheroe, gives you proper forest walking without the crowds you'd find on the Lake District fringes. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - dense trees, decent paths, the works. The area works brilliantly if you're based at Pendle View Holiday Park or one of the glamping spots nearby and you want to burn an hour or two without driving anywhere.

What you get is straightforward: mixed woodland with established trails that don't demand fell-walking boots. Oak and beech mostly, with a decent understory if you're the type who notices that sort of thing. It's good for families who want the woods without the faffing about - kids can run ahead without worrying about sheep or serious terrain. Walkers after a gentle morning ramble will appreciate the cover on rainy days, which, let's be honest, is most days in Lancashire.

Timing-wise, allow ninety minutes to two hours depending on which route you fancy. Spring's when it's genuinely worth the visit - bluebells and birdsong make it feel less like walking near a town. Autumn's pretty decent too if the weather holds.

From the caravan parks dotted around the area, Robinsons Wood is close enough for a casual outing but far enough away that it doesn't feel like you're just walking round the campsite perimeter. It's not going to blow your mind, but it'll do the job on a day when the Ribble Valley weather's being temperamental.
