Robin Hood's Cave

The cave itself is modest - a shallow sandstone shelter tucked into the hillside above Nottinghamshire's Robin Hood country, just inside the Derbyshire border near Hope Valley. You won't find gold or artefacts here, just a low-ceilinged chamber that's more alcove than proper cave, carved over centuries by water and time. The romantic claim that the outlaw hid here is almost certainly bollocks, but that doesn't stop people clambering up to peer inside.

It's a decent leg-stretch for walkers tackling the Peak District's better trails. The approach involves a short climb from the valley floor - nothing punishing, but enough to get the blood moving. The real appeal isn't the cave itself but rather being out there: scanning the valleys, breathing the moorland air, and feeling like you've stumbled onto something minor and slightly secret. Kids often enjoy the scramble more than the destination, which is honest.

Free to visit, accessible year-round, and it takes perhaps twenty minutes to reach and explore - though walkers often slot it into a longer circuit. It's worth the detour if you're camping at North Lees or Wyming Brook Farm, or using Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club as your base for exploring the Peak's deeper valleys. Don't expect drama, though. The cave is what it is: a footnote on the landscape, not its main event. Come for the walk, not the history.
