River Dane waterfall

The River Dane crashes down here with proper force, especially after heavy rain when you can feel the spray from twenty metres back. It's a short walk from Winsford - nothing strenuous - but the payoff is genuine: a waterfall that actually looks like it belongs in the Lake District rather than Cheshire. The reserve stretches either side of the falls, with paths threading through mixed woodland where you'll spot kingfishers if you're quiet about it. Water levels dictate everything. Come in summer and it's a trickle. December through March, after decent rainfall, and it roars. Worth timing your visit around that if possible. The walk takes twenty minutes maximum from the car park, so it's not an all-day commitment. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, though the rocks can be slippery. For serious hikers it's more of a pit stop than a destination - something to tick off while exploring the wider Cheshire countryside. If you're basing yourself at Holmston Hall nearby, this pairs well with a ramble along the river itself, which meanders through some lovely farmland. The reserve is free to roam and there's no formal entrance or facilities, which means it stays pleasantly unbusy even on weekends. Don't go expecting Niagara Falls in miniature, but on the right day it's a genuine highlight of the area.
