Ritto Hill

The walk up Ritto Hill rewards you with proper views across the Cheviot range - nothing fancy, just open moorland and the kind of horizon that makes you understand why people get obsessed with walking in Northumberland. It's a straightforward climb from the Wooler side, and on a clear day you can pick out the Cheviot itself rising beyond. The summit sits at around 455 metres, which means it's steep enough to feel like genuine exercise but won't take more than an hour or so to reach the top.

This is walkers' territory rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards. You get moorland, heather in season, and if the weather turns it'll be properly bleak. Families with young kids might struggle with the exposed ground on windy days, but capable school-age children will find it manageable. History types won't find much up there - it's about the landscape and the air, not the past.

If you're based at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just outside Wooler, this works perfectly as a half-day outing. Free to climb, naturally. Go early if you want decent visibility, and bring waterproof gear even when it looks dry - these hills shift quickly. The real appeal is the straightforward no-nonsense walk and the fact that it gets busy enough in summer that you won't feel alone, but quiet enough that you'll actually hear the wind.
