Risebrigg Hill

The walk up Risebrigg Hill from near Skipton rewards you with proper views across the Ribble Valley - the kind that make the leg work worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. You get the satisfaction of a solid walk without needing mountaineering kit or a head for heights.

The hill itself is moorland, rolling and open, with good paths most of the way. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. Walkers will get genuine pleasure from this one - families with older kids too, though younger ones might find the ascent a bit of a slog. History enthusiasts won't find much to investigate, but that's not what you're here for.

It's free, obviously. Timing-wise, go on a clear day or you're wasting the trek. Early autumn is lovely when the moorland grasses turn golden.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Thornton Hall Country Park is less than a mile away, or Holgates Ribble Valley a touch further - this makes a proper morning or afternoon outing. It slots well into a broader walking holiday in the area. The Skipton end of the Dales has no shortage of decent walks, so Risebrigg Hill works best as part of a longer itinerary rather than a solo pilgrimage. Worth the detour though if you're in the valley and fancy a bit of elevation.
