Rifleman Field

Rifleman Field is a working nature reserve just outside Haverfordwest, tucked away from the main tourist drag. What you're looking at here is a proper bit of Pembrokeshire countryside - grassland and wetland habitat that attracts a decent variety of birds and insects if you know what to look for. It's the sort of place you wander round with binoculars, not the sort where you queue for a coffee shop.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. You can spend a leisurely hour here, though there's nothing to stop you doubling that if you're serious about spotting species. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing technical. Go in spring or early summer when the wildflowers are out and the bird activity is more interesting - winter visits can feel a bit bleak unless you're after overwintering species.

It's free access, which is always welcome. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and check the weather.

Works well as a morning stop if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites like Three Fields or Creampots - both within a short drive. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is five miles away and frankly, if you've got the time, that's a bigger draw. But if you're keen on quieter nature spots and want to avoid the honeypot attractions, Rifleman Field does the job without fuss.
