Ridley Park

A woodland walk that actually rewards the effort - Ridley Park sits just inland from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and delivers proper quiet if you're willing to leave the caravan park behind for an afternoon. The reserve is a mix of woodland and open ground where you can expect to spot woodland birds, the occasional deer if you're lucky, and seasonal wildflowers that make the paths worth your boots. It's the sort of place where you genuinely feel removed from things, even though you're barely a few miles from the holiday parks dotted around Sandy Bay and Whitley Bay. The walking is manageable for families with older kids - nothing too steep or technical - though you'll want to check conditions after rain as parts do get muddy. Allow a couple of hours to wander properly rather than rush through. Best visited in spring or early summer when the woodland is in full leaf and bird activity peaks. The access is straightforward from Newbiggin, making it an easy half-day excursion from Parkdean Resorts Sandy Bay or the Old Hartley Caravan Club site without needing to travel far inland. Not somewhere you'd spend a whole day, but it fills a gap nicely on a park holiday when the weather's decent and you want to stretch your legs away from the crowds. The Northumberland coast has better-known draws, but this one keeps its regulars coming back.
