Riding Head Mill Pond

The pond at Riding Head Mill is a proper working landscape feature rather than a manicured tourist spot, which is exactly why it works. You'll find it near Bury, tucked into the Lancashire countryside where the industrial past hasn't been entirely scrubbed away. It's the sort of place where you can actually see how mills once powered this region - the water management is still doing what it did two centuries ago.

Walkers get the most from it. There's a gentle circuit around the water, and the paths give you good views across the pond without any of the managed-attraction faffing about. On a clear day you can see proper distance from here. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the place attracts waterfowl year-round. The walk itself takes about thirty minutes at a casual pace - long enough to feel like you've done something, short enough that you won't regret it if the weather turns.

Nobody's charging admission as far as I can tell, and there's no visitor centre nonsense. That said, facilities are minimal. There's parking nearby but nothing else - no cafes, no loos. Go prepared.
