Rhuddgaer Romano-British Settlement

Stone foundations and earthwork remains mark where Romano-British families once lived and farmed on Anglesey, though you'll need a good imagination to picture their daily lives. The settlement at Rhuddgaer offers little more than grassy mounds and scattered masonry - archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the site's significance, but casual visitors might find it rather underwhelming.

Walking across the uneven ground, you can make out the outlines of rectangular buildings and what appears to be a courtyard arrangement typical of Romano-British farmsteads. History buffs who've done their homework will get the most from a visit, as there's precious little interpretation on site to explain what you're looking at.

Families staying at nearby parks like Glan Gwna or Morfa Lodge might combine this with a trip to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll - the town with the famously long name is just a short drive away. The site works best as a brief stop rather than a destination in itself. Allow thirty minutes at most, and don't expect much if the weather's been wet - the ground can get properly boggy.

Archaeology students and Roman history enthusiasts will find it worth the detour, but most visitors would be better served by Anglesey's more dramatic ancient sites. It's free to wander around, assuming you can find it - the exact location isn't well signposted from the main roads.
