Llys Rhosyr

The ruins of a 13th-century Welsh court sit in fields just outside Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, and unless you know exactly where to look, you'll walk straight past them. Llys Rhosyr is the remains of Llywelyn the Great's royal residence - a proper slice of medieval Welsh history that most visitors to Anglesey never find.

What you actually get is a collection of stone foundations and low walls scattered across a field. The main court building is still identifiable if you've got any imagination, and the scale of the place becomes clear once you're standing in it - this was serious architecture for its time. There's a small stone marker to explain what you're looking at, though nothing fancy. No admission fee, no opening times to worry about. Just you, the fields, and 800 years of history.

Walkers and history types will find this genuinely interesting. Kids might manage twenty minutes if the weather's decent and they're the sort who enjoy a good clamber over old stones. Most families heading to the holiday parks around here - Llanfair Hall, Anglesey Holiday Pods, and Coed Helen are all within a few miles - would be better spending the same time at somewhere with more obvious attractions. But if you're the kind of person who gets a kick out of standing where actual medieval princes once held court, this is well worth the detour from your caravan. Bring sturdy shoes. The ground can be boggy.
