Rhobell Fawr

The walk up Rhobell Fawr isn't particularly famous, which is precisely why it's worth doing. This 720-metre peak sits just outside Dolgellau in Gwynedd, close enough for a proper morning expedition but remote enough that you won't be queuing for views.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble - boots recommended, but nothing technical. The ascent takes around ninety minutes depending on your pace, and the ridge at the top opens out to views across the Cader Idris range and down towards the coast. On a clear day it's genuinely stunning. On a grey Welsh day, which is frankly more likely, you get that moody mountain light that makes photography actually interesting.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might find the boggy bits tedious. Serious hillwalkers could combine it with nearby peaks for a longer day. The walking community treats this as a warm-up rather than a destination, which suits me - no crowds, no gift shops, just a proper Snowdonia experience.

Based near Dolgellau, you're well-positioned for the broader area. Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park sits just 4.1 miles away and genuinely earns its five-star rating - proper facilities, friendly management. From there you could easily tag Rhobell Fawr onto other local walks.

Go early, bring weather-appropriate kit, and don't expect facilities at the summit. Free, naturally. Allow a half-day minimum, more if you're exploring the surrounding hills.
