Reigate Caves

The sandstone tunnels under Reigate town centre aren't quite what you'd expect. Cut into the soft Folkestone beds centuries ago, possibly for storage or even refuge, they're modest rather than grand - narrow passages that feel more intimate than imposing. You'll duck your head in places. The caves sit right beneath the town, accessible via Reigate Priory, and they're genuinely atmospheric in that damp, slightly eerie way that British underground spaces tend to be.

History buffs will find them worth an hour's poking around, though they're not a full day's entertainment. Families with younger kids might get restless quickly unless they're into a bit of subterranean exploring. The light can be tricky, so bring a torch if you're serious about seeing the carved marks and alcoves properly.

Admission details are thin on the ground, but access is typically through the Priory grounds. Check locally before heading out from Tadworth - opening hours and charges vary. The caves work well if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Betchworth Fort Park or Surrey Hills Park, both within easy reach. They make a decent half-hour detour when you're already in the area exploring the North Downs, though don't expect them to be the highlight of your Surrey trip. They're interesting rather than unmissable, and the surrounding town of Reigate itself has more going on if the caves feel too claustrophobic for your group.
