Redpine

The walk up to Redpine takes you straight through proper Peak District moorland, all heather and gritstone, with the kind of views that make you understand why people move to Derbyshire and never leave. It's a landmark rather than a destination with facilities - no visitor centre, no cafe, just a distinctive stone or outcrop that marks a spot on the landscape. What you're really after here is the walk itself and the location's place in the local geography around Hope Valley.

This is one for walkers who know what they're doing, or at least those happy to bash about on the hills for a couple of hours. Families with young kids might find the trudge unrewarding unless they're the outdoorsy type. The real appeal is the sense of accomplishment when you reach it - that moment when you've left the car parks and crowds behind and you're genuinely alone on the moor.

If you're based at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, or Laneside Caravan Park a bit further out, Redpine works well as a half-day ramble. It's the sort of thing you do on a clear morning before the light gets fuzzy, then head back for lunch. Don't expect much signposting or hand-holding - bring a map, wear proper boots, and check the weather. The moorland can shift moods quickly.
