Red Barn Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Whitby, Red Barn Wood offers the kind of forest that feels a world away from the seaside crowds. Think mature trees, mossy paths, and enough shade to make a hot day bearable. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong without fighting through throngs of tourists.

The woodland itself isn't vast - you can work through the main tracks in an hour or so - but it's well worth the detour if you're based at any of the nearby holiday parks. Northcliffe & Seaview, Broadings Farm, or Whitby Holiday Park are all within easy striking distance, so it makes for a decent morning or afternoon break from seaside life. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the terrain a bit uneven in places.

What makes it work is the simplicity. No visitor centre nonsense, no admission fees to navigate. Just woodland as it should be. You'll spot the occasional stream, plenty of ferns, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why people bother with the countryside. Walkers will appreciate it as a proper stretch of the legs rather than a stroll; it feels genuine rather than manicured.

Go midweek if you can, particularly early autumn when the light filters through differently. Spring's fine too, though you'll share it with half of North Yorkshire on weekends. Allow a good couple of hours if you want to properly explore rather than just dash through.
