Read Wood

Read Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Clitheroe, the sort of place that rewards a morning's ramble without demanding the full fell-walker's kit. It's mixed broadleaf forest - nothing wildly dramatic, but genuinely pleasant underfoot and quiet enough that you'll actually hear the birds. Paths wind through it in a fairly straightforward way, making it manageable for families with kids who can handle a gentle slope or two.

The main appeal here is simplicity. No visitor centre, no café, no admission fee - just woodland and time. You could spend an hour pottering about or make it longer depending on mood. Spring brings bluebells and bird activity if you time it right; autumn's decent too, though Lancashire woodland rarely turns as theatrical as the Lake District's higher slopes.

Walkers will find it useful as a short sharp break between longer routes in the Ribble Valley. It's close enough to Pendle View Holiday Park and Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site to be a proper evening stroll from base, which counts for something. If you're after dramatic views or rare woodland flora, you'll be disappointed. But if you want somewhere green and manageable without faffing about with car parks or entry fees, it does the job. Worth the detour if you're already in the area staying at one of the nearby parks - exactly the sort of low-key exploration that makes a decent holiday.
