Quarry Plantation

The woodland at Quarry Plantation spreads across a decent chunk of Northumberland countryside just outside Belford, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick march-through. The forest itself is mixed - conifers planted densely enough to block out most of the sky in places, but with enough open glades and mature broadleaves to keep things interesting. You'll find a network of paths threading through, some wide and obvious, others narrower and requiring a bit of navigation. The ground is soft underfoot, which is lovely in winter but can get muddy, so decent boots are worth the bother.

It's genuinely worthwhile for woodland walkers and anyone keen on forestry. Kids will get an hour or so out of it, though there's no playground or fancy features - just trees and paths. The isolation is part of the appeal if you're after genuine peace. Getting out here from Belford takes twenty minutes by car, and it sits within striking distance of the holiday parks clustered around Budle Bay and Bamburgh - Budle Bay Campsite and Bamburgh Under Canvas are both under five miles away, making this a solid half-day option if you're based at one of those.

Bring an OS map or a decent GPS app because the paths can peter out without warning. There's no visitor centre, no café, and you'll likely have the place to yourself even in summer. Free access, though there's nowhere obvious to park - you're looking at roadside spots nearby. Best visited when the ground's firm rather than after heavy rain.
