The Priory Gardens near Dunstable is a proper slice of tranquility - the sort of place where you actually notice how quiet it is. The grounds sit on the site of a medieval priory, and you can still trace the bones of the old layout if you know what to look for. What's there now is a well-maintained garden with herbaceous borders, woodland walks, and enough open space to let kids actually run about without worrying they'll crash into a sculpture.
