Prior's Wood

Prior's Wood sits on the edge of Longney, a proper working forest that feels genuinely separate from the everyday. You're walking through deciduous woodland - oak, beech, ash - with decent paths that wind through without feeling manicured or over-managed. It's the kind of place where you notice the light filtering through the canopy changes every fifty metres.

Walkers will get the most from this. The terrain is easy enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might lose interest after an hour or so since there aren't playground attachments or facilities to break things up. The real appeal is the walk itself - it's quiet, it works year-round (autumn colours are genuinely worth timing a visit for), and you can actually hear the wood: birds, the occasional rustle, footsteps on leaf litter.

Access is free as far as I can establish, though there's no clear information online about formal opening hours - it reads as the kind of place you access during daylight without much fuss. Allow an hour minimum if you're doing a proper loop; two hours if you're stopping to look at things properly.

If you're staying at any of the caravan parks within five miles - The Glamping Orchard or Apple Orchard are closest - Prior's Wood makes a solid morning outing before you head somewhere with more amenities. It's not a destination in itself, but paired with other Gloucestershire woodland walks or a day exploring Longney's riverside stretches, it fills the gap well.
