Sparks Gutter

A narrow woodland stream cutting through dense forest near Longney - that's Sparks Gutter in a nutshell. The gutter itself is essentially a wooded ravine where water has carved out a path through Gloucestershire's forest floor. On a decent day it's atmospheric - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong and the stream rather than traffic. In winter it gets genuinely boggy and slippery underfoot, which can be either a selling point or a reason to avoid it depending on your tolerance for muddy boots.

This is squarely for walkers and forest types rather than families hoping for a picnic spot. Young kids might find thirty minutes interesting before getting restless; teenagers who actually like nature will happily spend longer exploring. The locals use it as a straightforward loop walk from Longney, nothing dramatic.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no formal parking or facilities to speak of. Best visited after dry weather when the paths aren't treacherous - spring through autumn is your window. Given the cluster of camping and caravan sites within five miles, it slots nicely into a broader forest holiday in the area, though it's worth combining with walks around Symonds Yat or the Wye Valley for a fuller picture of what Gloucestershire's woodlands offer.
